You do NOT need to re-register it or pay back registration fees before donating. The vehicle doesn’t need to run; our towing partner picks it up at no cost. After pickup, the charity is responsible for the car, and you should notify the Indiana BMV of the transfer to stop future tax and liability issues. It’s a clean, straightforward way to clear your driveway and support Hoosier Wheels and Heritage for the Blind.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check your Indiana title, not your plates
Locate your Indiana vehicle title and make sure it lists you (or you and a co-owner) as the owner. The registration can be months or years expired—that’s okay. A clear, signed title is what we need to legally transfer the vehicle; outdated stickers or lapsed plates do not block your donation.
2. Call or submit our quick online donation form
Share basic details: year, make, model, VIN, whether it runs, and where it’s parked in Indiana—Indianapolis, South Bend, Muncie, Lafayette, or anywhere in between. Let us know the tags are expired. We’ll confirm that we can accept it as-is for Heritage for the Blind and schedule your free pickup time.
3. Schedule free Indiana towing (running or not)
You do not have to drive the car or make it roadworthy. Our towing partner comes to your driveway, street spot, storage lot, or farm property at no cost. From downtown Indy to rural counties, we handle the logistics, so your expired registration never becomes a reason to visit the BMV first.
4. Sign the title correctly at pickup
At pickup, you’ll sign your Indiana title over to Hoosier Wheels or our authorized agent. The tow driver will guide you to the proper seller section and verify ID if needed. Once the title is signed and the car is on the truck, responsibility shifts away from you and toward the charity/authorized buyer.
5. Notify the Indiana BMV of the transfer
After pickup, you should report the transfer of ownership to the Indiana BMV. This helps stop future registration notices, tax bills, or liability tied to that VIN. We’ll give you the information you need so state records eventually reflect that the vehicle is no longer in your name.
6. Receive your tax receipt for Heritage for the Blind
Once the vehicle is processed, we mail you a tax-deductible receipt. In many cases, you can claim up to $500; if it sells for more, we issue the documentation you need for IRS Form 1098-C. Your expired registration never affects your ability to receive this deduction for supporting Heritage for the Blind.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or damaged Indiana title
Tip: If your title is lost, heavily damaged, or still in a previous owner’s name, the expired registration doesn’t matter—the title does. Contact the Indiana BMV for a duplicate or to correct ownership before scheduling pickup. We can explain what information the BMV will typically ask for so you’re prepared.
Co-owners or lienholders still listed
Tip: If two people are listed on the title, or a finance company/lienholder still appears, those parties may need to sign off before donation. We’ll review your title details and tell you exactly which signatures are required so the transfer is valid and doesn’t get delayed after we tow the vehicle away.
Car stored in a restricted or tight location
Tip: Towing a non-running, unregistered car can be tricky if it’s in an underground garage, backyard, or tight alley in places like downtown Indianapolis or near campus in Bloomington. Let us know in advance where and how it’s parked so we can send the right truck and avoid rescheduling your pickup.
Unpaid tickets or local violations tied to the plate
Tip: An expired registration won’t stop the donation, but unpaid parking tickets or local violations tied to your old plate may still be your responsibility. Donating the car won’t erase existing fines. You’ll likely need to resolve those separately with your city or county, even after the title is transferred.
